Rounding Third, Heading Home! by David Aretha

ISBN#: 978-0-7660-3876-9
Genre: Fiction

Jake is a 4th grade boy who plays on a Little League team in Hickory Oak, Michigan. Early in the book you find out quickly that this character has a sense of humor that most young children will enjoy. For example, the teams name is Morey’s Funeral Home and Jake makes a comment about not minding because “Morey’s Puts the ‘Fun’ in Funeral”. This same type of humor continues all the way through the book.

His team is definitely one of the worst teams in his league. Jake has hope that things will be different this year, since they have a new coach. At their first practice they came up with a new motto - “Ya gotta believe!”

This book is told through Jake’s eyes. He loves baseball and he refers to many different professional baseball players throughout the book. Although I am not an avid fan of baseball, I found the information that was shared in the book interesting.

Jake’s team is made up of a wide range of personalities. His father told him that you’re not a real ballplayer until you have a nickname. Therefore, Jake gave nicknames to all of the players on his team. He refers to them as “goofballs” so it was relatively easy to come up with names for all of them.

Young readers will enjoy reading about their progress through the baseball season.
